Logo or face? Who would you rather chat with?
What do you have as your company Twitter profile picture? What should you have as your company Twitter profile picture?
These are questions we asked of our Twitter followers recently. Ever since we’d set up our Twitter account, we’d used a logo as our Twitter avatar, admittedly it was a rather lovely logo, but still a logo… a simple black icon through which we were trying to communicate with the outside world.
We read up about ‘Twitter best practice’ and found as many arguments for using a logo in your profile as against, so throwing caution to the wind we exchanged our company logo for a personal picture. So far the response has been rather positive.
As a design agency where personal relationships are key, we feel that a personal picture is not only justified, but beneficial. That said, if I was searching for Topshop, Thames Water or Vodafone on Twitter, I wouldn’t believe that I’d found the correct account until I’d found the profile carrying their logo.
Our belief is that a large B2C company who trade on the strength of their brand name, should always use a logo in their profile. Whereas a small B2B company where people are doing business with people, a personal pic can be very helpful.
As I say, that is just our personal opinion, we’d love to hear yours!

Hi Natalie,
We found your blog very interesting. We too, started using twitter, using our logo as our avatar – however, people do buy from people and we feel it is essential to see who you are “tweeting” to – no matter how large or small the company. Twitter is all about relationships and people – you get a feel for the personality of the “twitterer” and that’s what keeps you chatting. You will see that large corps do feature photos – Starbucks used to just feature a logo but now their MD faces the world with a Starbucks mug – so you can be assured that you have found the correct person. We believe that a logo in the photo is beneficial too as not only do you get the face but you get the brand awareness too – hence our logo on my shirt.
Loving the blog – and the tweets!
