How do you find inspiration?
That moment when something inside you clicks, when you discover the perfect way of solving that problem… that’s what we’re all looking for. Inspiration.
Mothers want it when planning meals for the week, writers want it when they stare at a blank page, business people want it when writing yet another tender document and I’m sure David Cameron and Nick Clegg pray for it nightly!
As marketers we need to stimulate inspiration and constantly seek out new ideas to get our key messages across to our target audience. Now, saying it is easy, it’s the doing it that’s hard. With ever more demands upon our time, how do we find the opportunity to chase that elusive inspiration and cultivate those ideas to fruition?
I’m sure everyone who reads this post is familiar with the situation where we allocate time to think, to be creative… then before we know it, the phone has rung, a colleague has asked for some help then that precious half hour has evaporated. All that is left is a feeling of frustration which only keeps inspiration away.
My favourite way to seek inspiration is to get away from my desk, by physically removing myself from the workplace and going outside. Seeing the world at large puts work into perspective and relieves the pressure to be creative, the freedom allows me to daydream and approach problems from new angles and by being away from my desk I have the time to think things through fully.
Some of my best ideas have been born from a lunchtime wander, other people say a bath is the place where great ideas hit them. I’m really interested to hear not only where you find inspiration, but how you carve time out of your day to allow inspiration to find you!

Surely ‘business people’ not just business men?
Hi Liz
Thank you for your comment, well spotted and I’ve amended immediately !

The good news/bad news about being the ADD Poster Girl is how jealously I need to guard my “wake-up window.” I have finally learned I can do NOTHING in that window that requires a decision, and that admin attempts can ruin an entire day – either sets me off in the direction of “recover your mind-set” I can’t seem to change.
What I CAN do with that “stare-at-the-wall” time is drink coffee and MUSE, letting my still-sluggish mind wander where it will (pen and paper nearby to capture anything I might want to follow up on later.) Some of my BEST ideas have begun to take for in that window.
